Community Management of the shop
In 2017 Roadwater villagers formed and registered a Community Benefit Society (CBS) to buy and run the Community Shop. Just over a year later we had raised sufficient funds to achieve Phase 1 goal and in July 2018 we took ownership of the property and business. Most of the money was raised locally through shares and donations, plus grants from donors (see Funding Support below for details). Purchase of a minimum share holding of £25 carries automatic membership of the CBS, with voting rights. (see Governance below for details).
Now we have completed Phase 2 of our strategic plan. This involved raising the money to renovate and extend the building in order to establish a café and community hub. In February 2020 this enhanced the service the shop already provides, creating a space for people to socialise and access information and support. During the Covid 19 pandemic, in line with varying regulations, the cafe has mostly been closed for seating but has continued providing take away drinks and snack food. Some of this space is providing a useful area for packing and coordinating delivery boxes distributed by shop volunteers.
